ABOUT

ASIAN PREMIERE

“[Teatrocinema] does the technology superbly. The singers become a seamless part of the animation.” – Los Angeles Times

Mahler’s monumental Song of the Earth is given theatrical and cinematic staging by the Chilean theatre group Teatrocinema. Played by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Paolo Bortolameolli, Associate Conductor of the LA Phil, Teatrocinema’s Song of the Earth is an immersive visual journey into Mahler’s musical statement on the transience of life.

Debuted with LA Phil and commissioned by Gustavo Dudamel in 2018, the animated visuals reveal the emotions deep in Mahler’s symphony of farewell, created after the death of his daughter, with inspiration from a book of Chinese poems. Mahler did not live to hear the premiere of this work—one of his last completed symphonies—but this live performance of orchestra, vocalists and visual splendour will draw you into his world, his loneliness and his yearning for love.
